AMERICAN STUDIES NETWORK WEBINAR
“Rethinking Whiteness in 21st-century American Studies”
Friday, February 18, 1-2.30 PM GMT
This webinar considers the relevance of Whiteness in American Studies research today. In recent years, culture wars over the meanings of Whiteness in U.S. history and society have been fierce. Ranging from statue debates and the teaching of history to extremist politics and practices, they also have far-reaching resonance in various transnational contexts, including protests and backlash in Europe. By discussing Whiteness in relation to Critical Race Theory, Masculinity Studies, and Indigenous Studies, the panelists reassess the processes and mechanisms through which Whiteness assumes meaning in 21st-century research and public debates. Comprising scholars working across Europe, the event seeks to promote transdisciplinary American Studies research and to engender collaboration between centers within the European American Studies Network.
