6th Interdisciplinary Conference in the Humanities

Language constantly informs and transforms our lives, from day-to-day shared experiences to the unique art of literary creation. It is both an essential part of our being and a site of struggle for access to privileged spaces. This year’s Conference seeks unexpected connections across linguistic, geographical, and disciplinary borders that explore language as a vehicle for justice.
The theme of this year’s Conference is “Language Justice.” Possible paper topics include:
Language and Literature in Society
➢ How words shape people and cultures
➢ Amplifying underrepresented voices
➢ Language access in policy and personal experience
Translation
➢ Literary translation
➢ Careers in translation and interpreting
➢ Specialized translation (medicine, criminal justice, education, technology)
Linguistics and Language Acquisition
➢ Global experiences and study abroad
➢ Teaching languages for heritage speakers
➢ Bilingualism / Multilingualism
➢ Gender and language
The conference will have a hybrid format (in-person or Zoom).
Deadline & how to apply
Please submit a short abstract (150-250 words) to wll-conference@csus.edu. Along with your abstract, submit your preference for an in-person or Zoom presentation.
We are accepting individual paper or full panel proposals from professional scholars, educators, graduate students, and community members. Papers may be in English or Spanish. Full panels may be submitted in other languages if presenters arrange oral interpretation or written handouts in English or Spanish.
For full panels, please submit one abstract for the panel, along with the names of the moderator(s) and panelists. Undergraduate students may participate in a panel chaired and submitted by a university faculty member.
Deadline for abstracts: September 1st, 2023
Notification of acceptance: September 17th, 2023

Registration fee: $80 for professionals, $40 for students. Discounted rates available for participants representing non-profit or community-based organizations.
