The Vice President and Chief Program Officer (CPO)
The Vice President and Chief Program Officer (CPO) is Salzburg Global’s top program executive, responsible for designing, developing, and executing a program of strategic convening and cross-border collaboration on issues of global importance.
In-person programs occur at Salzburg Global’s home Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg, Austria; in Washington, DC, and in other selected locations around the world. Online and digital programs have become a critical part of our program portfolio, with more than 80 online programs conducted in 2020.

Key Tasks:
- Catalyze organizations and donors to advance their goals through multi-year partnerships, leading programs from strategy and design to implementation and evaluation
- Shape long-term initiatives that deepen and leverage worldwide networks
- Act as a visible ambassador for Salzburg Global in Austria and internationally, exemplifying the Seminar’s renowned hospitality and creating conditions of trust among partners and participants
- Play a key role in partnership development and fund-raising
- Anticipate future trends and drivers
- Contribute to brand-building, communications, and marketing activities
- As a Member of the Senior Management Team help align strategy, financial management, and external accountability in service of mission
Accountability: The CPO reports to the President & Chief Executive Officer and is a member of the organization’s Senior Management Team. The individual interacts regularly with Board committees around program strategy and oversight.
Team: There are currently 8 staff and contract Program Directors reporting to the CPO.
Location: The CPO will primarily reside and spend a significant part of the year in Salzburg, Austria and will interact regularly with colleagues based in the United States and across Europe. Program partners are located on six continents so the ability to manage and communicate remotely and across time zones is important, as is a willingness to travel internationally when conditions allow. All business travel costs are reimbursed, and on-site housing is provided in Salzburg as needed for the CPO.
Compensation: A competitive compensation package on par with similar sized and influential international non-profit organizations, including a housing benefit, will be offered to attract the most qualified candidates. In addition, the executive will be eligible for an annual bonus based on performance, will receive full health and retirement benefits according to Austrian law, as well as 25 days of paid vacation each year and more than 10 paid holidays annually.
Professional Qualifications and Experiences:
The Seminar seeks a motivated and inspiring leader who is highly regarded for their intellectual curiosity and global thinking. They will bring global contacts, networks and partnering skill to the assignment. They will have outstanding communications skills and energy to raise the profile, advance the mission, and work alongside a dedicated Salzburg Global Seminar team. The next CPO will be an outstanding cross-disciplinary thinker. The ideal candidate will have the following professional and personal characteristics:
- Minimum of 15 years of progressive responsibility, leadership and demonstrated results in programs, strategy, or partnership development, including extensive experience in presenting their ideas effectively
- Proven ability to manage and/or lead others as demonstrated by experience navigating around obstacles to reach a critical goal, leading a diverse workforce, and effectively aligning resources with strategic objectives
- Ability to communicate complexity with the talent for “telling a story” in a captivating, bridge-building manner
- Business acumen, comfort in building coalitions and partnerships with business, government, NGOs, philanthropy, academia and media
- Experience in convening diverse groups around pressing global issues. Affinity for digital communications and ideally experience in virtual convening
