Duties
The Milan Public Affairs Section’s Digital Media Assistant (DMA) is responsible for the development, management and maintenance of outreach media capabilities at the US Consulate General in Milan. His/her primary responsibility is to manage the Consulate’s digital presence including overseeing content on the Consulate’s webpage on the Mission’s official website, working closely with the Embassy Rome Public Affairs website team, and working with the Embassy digital team to manage Mission interface with social media networks such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn in accordance with established State Department standards and best practices. In addition to the production of digital media content, the DMA also advises and trains Consulate’s personnel as necessary on digital content creation to amplify events/meetings managed by other sections or agencies. The DMA also supervises the American and Italian internship program for public affairs; this requires recruiting, interviewing, training, and supervising selected interns whose work primarily is focused on social media. Additionally, the DMA serves as the Consulate’s expert on digital technologies and is expected to organize activities and programs that promote the advancement of digital literacy, digital entrepreneurship, and new media. The Consulate’s DMA then coordinates closely with the DMAs at Embassy Rome and Consulate Naples in the development of pan-Mission messaging and engagement strategies that seek to foster synergies, and to equitably divide the workload concerning national-level initiatives.
Qualifications and Evaluations
- Requirements:
- EXPERIENCE: At least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in design, creation and packaging of visual and multimedia content for digital marketing, advertising or mass communications purposes. Of these 3 years, 1 year must have been acquired as an advanced end user of industry standard desktop and mobile software applications, internet and related communications technologies, and integration of visual content into web content management systems.
JOB KNOWLEDGE: The DMA must have advanced knowledge of the U.S. and Italy, including the government, institutions, policies, culture, and history. The DMA must possess significant knowledge of the Italian information environment, public opinion, mainstream media, blogosphere and online media, political/social trends. He/she must have specialized knowledge on new media technologies and social media environments, including principles of online marketing and advertising – including, digital strategy development and long-term campaign planning, execution, and community management. He/she should have a good understanding of Italian politics and the skills to monitor, analyze, and report on specific digital activities of political parties, fringe and protest groups, and top online influencers. The DMA must have broad general knowledge on the design and development of digital media products and the application of design principles to electronic and audio/visual media, including a working knowledge of photo and video editing and design products. Also required: expert knowledge of technological developments in digital hardware and on-line software tools is required to enhance efficiency and quality; as well as excellent working knowledge of a variety of digital media facets, including campaign planning, content production, digital audio/video production & editing, and targeted distribution, including spend and placement strategy.

- University degree in Journalism, Political Science, Design, Digital Media, Communications or local equivalent is required.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Demonstrated visual and multimedia design competencies. Excellent customer service orientation, interpersonal, and cross-cultural skills. Ability to train/teach technical skills to customers of various skill levels. Ability to research and create content, in English and Italian, when professional interpretation is not available.

Note: the advertised salary refers to a basic gross annual salary on a full-time schedule.
