What, when & where
We are seeking contributors and proposals for chapters to be included in the forthcoming Cambridge Companion to American Protest Literature, newly commissioned by Cambridge University Press.
The temporal scope of the collection will range from the colonial period to the present day. Rather than focusing exclusively on individual protest writers, specific texts, or specific historical events, the essays ideally will address these in the context of broader themes, often across historical periods. These themes might include (for example): settler colonialism and Indigenous resistance; slavery and abolition; territorial expansion and imperialism; war and militarism; political freedom and reform; labor and capitalism; immigration and nativism; environmental degradation; racism; gender and sexuality.
There will, of course, be other themes to consider, and we welcome suggestions from contributors. Overall, the aim will be to assist readers in grasping and experiencing the rich and exhilarating tradition of American protest writing, across all genres.
Deadline & how to apply
Chapters will be between 5,000 and 6,000 words in length.
Please email brief but detailed ideas or – better yet – short abstracts, along with a list of your previous publications, to the editor: Will Kaufman, Professor of American Literature and Culture, University of Central Lancashire, UK: wkaufman@uclan.ac.uk.
Deadline: 1 September 2021.
