15/03/2020 – New York. Summer institute “abolition”

call for papers abolition

What, when & where

The New York Metro American Studies Association (NYMASA) seeks participants in a week-long summer Institute on the theme of Abolition to be held from June 26, 2020, to June 29, 2020, at Hunter College, City University of New York. Drawing on the long and rich histories of abolition movements in the Americas, the institute will combine seminars, field trips, and the sharing of work in progress by participants.

Abolitionism has long been a vital element of American life, and as a political strategy has adapted to different historical moments. As a radical response to colonization and displacement, enslavement, imperialism, militarism, environmental injustice, and mass incarceration, abolition has taken up a variety of strategies from armed struggle to tax resistance to peaceful protest. Along with movements for abolition, activists have reimagined a better, more democratic and just world. At the same time, abolition movements have not been immune to the inequities of gender, race, class, and national origin, among other differences. We are especially interested in projects that engage with these tensions, that embrace a variety of historical periods, and that engage with comparative perspectives or a combination of these approaches.

We imagine this institute to encompass a variety of disciplines and practices.
We hope to include a diverse and inclusive group of participants, including but not limited to K-12 teachers, graduate students, higher education faculty at all levels and from all kinds of institutions, community organizers, and artists in all fields and genres.

***Black, Brown, Indigenous women, queer, trans, nonbinary, and other underrepresented folx are especially encouraged to submit abstracts***
