Avant-Garde as Protest:
The American Avant-Garde and Experimental Poetics
The American avant-garde has provided the space for protest in challenging times and has given voice to alternative points of view that have come from diverse socio-cultural, political and ethnic backgrounds. The American poetry production in particular has been prone to innovation and the promotion of experimental practices traced back to Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson. Recent technological advancements have influenced a great deal experimental poetic practice, with new media taking on a vital role in its conception and execution. Looking back to their modernist predecessors, contemporary poets carry on the spirit of the modernist avant-garde to their present day poetry endeavors and artistic experimentations.
This panel aims to explore the subversive and controversial role of experimental poetry practice within the context of the American avant-garde scene.
