The Papers of Martin Van Buren seeks an assistant editor for a Jul 2019-June 2020 appointment, with the possibility of extended employment dependent on grant funding. The position will require the editor to catalog, transcribe, annotate, and/or proofread documents for the project, which is producing digital and print editions of approximately 13,000 known Van Buren documents.

Candidate must possess:

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Exceptional analytical and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in reading and comprehending nineteenth-century handwriting
  • Experience with documentary editing and/or a research specialty in U.S. politics between 1800 and 1865 will be considered a plus

Applications are sought for a visiting assistant professor of history. The successful candidate will teach five courses, specifically World Civilization I, World Civilization II, History of the United States I, and/or History of the United States II, in both the Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 semesters. Courses may be taught on campus and/or at dual enrollment sites in area high schools. These courses are options for the fulfillment of the History component of Cumberland University’s General Education Core, and in the History major. These survey courses should provide students with a rigorous introduction to major historical themes, as well as to college-level writing, thinking, and analysis.
