Middelburg, The Netherlands, 2-4 May 2018
The Roosevelt Institute for American Studies (RIAS) is a library, research institute, and graduate school, partnered with Leiden University. Since 2003, the Institute has organized regular seminars for doctoral students pursuing research in its areas of interest, and past participants have included students from leading universities across Europe and the United States.
The RIAS will host its next PhD seminar on 2-4 May 2018, and we kindly invite applications from current PhD candidates whose research covers any aspect of U.S. culture, society, politics, or foreign relations in the 19th and 20th centuries. We welcome proposals for research papers (e.g. a thesis chapter), or for papers that give an overview of the PhD project in its entirety.
Participants will present their paper and contextualize it within their research project in 10 minutes. Each presentation is followed by a group discussion of approximately 45 minutes, providing an opportunity for extensive feedback. Applicants are invited to submit their proposals, consisting of a 300-word abstract and a CV, no later than Friday, 2 March 2018, to the seminar coordinator, Dr. Cees Heere, at c.heere@zeeland.nl.
Those selected to participate should be prepared to submit a full-length paper (approximately 7,500 words) by Friday, 13 April 2018. Papers will be circulated in advance. Accommodation and meals in Middelburg will be provided by the RIAS. For further information, please consult our website at http://www.roosevelt.nl, or contact the seminar coordinator.
